Substrate

This substrate is our own mix.

We mix in:

• Peat moss for moisture retention
  
• Top soil for bulk and organic materials
  
• Sphagnum moss for even more moisture retention
• Leaf litter and mulch for organic materials that detritivores will love
• Sand for drainage and stability
• Mycorrhizal inoculant for root health in any plants and to create a healthy fungal root system. Springtails and isopods love it!
• Other organic materials (such as worm castings and bat guano)
• Wood pellets for an added food source
• Crushed oyster shell for an added calcium source
• And Limestone to bring down acidity (peat moss and sphagnum moss are acidic)

Our gnat repellent substrate also includes BTI- which is a naturally occurring bacteria. It only harms the larvae of mosquitoes, fungus gnats, and black flies. It is completely harmless to clean up crews, pets, and humans! (BTI can even safely be used in pet water bowls, fish tanks, pools, and many other water containers. We use it in all of our own reptile, amphibian, and invertebrate enclosures)
